Meta tag generator

Most generators take a keyword and guess. This one fetches your page, checks the tags you already have, works out what the page is actually about, then writes three options that fit inside Google's limits.

What happens when you press the button

A keyword box and a text generator would be faster to build. It would also be writing about a page it has never seen.

    01
    It fetches the page

The real page at the address you gave, followed through any redirects. Not a description of it, not a keyword standing in for it.

    02
    It reads what is there

Title, meta description, the first H1, and the body copy with the scripts, styles and navigation stripped out, so what reaches the writer is the text a reader would see.

    03
It measures the tags you already have

Lengths against the limits, whether the title duplicates the H1, whether your keyword appears in the title, the description and the body, and whether the page is thin. These are counted, not guessed, so they cannot be wrong.

    04
It names what the page is about

The primary keyword is read out of the page and shown back to you. If it read the page wrong, you can see that before you paste anything into your site.

    05
It writes three options, then checks them

Three different angles on the same page, each with the keyword near the front of the title. Lengths are enforced in code afterwards, because a model asked for 158 characters will still hand back 190.

What it will not do is invent a service, a location or a price that is not on the page. It only has your page to work from, which is the point.

What makes a title tag work

    Say what the page is

Lead with the thing, not the brand. Someone scanning ten results is looking for a match, and your name only helps once they already know it.

    Fit the space

Around 60 characters for a title and 158 for a description. Past that it is cut, and the cut usually lands mid-sentence.

    Write for the click

The description is not a ranking factor. It is the line that decides whether someone picks you over the result above you.

    Match the page

A title promising something the page does not deliver gets the click and loses the customer, and Google notices the bounce.

    Title tags and meta descriptions

    Tags are the easy part

Good tags lift the click rate on a position you already hold. If you are not showing up at all, that is a different problem. Run a free grid scan and see where you stand.
